This statement describes how I feel as an artist to a T! Photography is where I go to relax, push myself and see beauty in all things and relationships. I look forward to sharing with you sneak peaks of sessions, personal musings and general tidbits of what I hold so near to my heart.
Shona Reid Photography is located in Ottawa, Ontario, and is a member of the National Association of Professional Child Photographers (NAPCP) and the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI).
Back in January I was lucky enough to fly out to the beautiful Canadian Rockies to attend Dana Pugh’s Short and Sweet Winter Retreat. There’s pretty much no “bad time” to go to Canmore and when some of your closest friends in the world live there, it’s ALWAYS a great time!
This is the little “shack” where the retreat was held…yup, slummed it for a couple of days for sure!
It was so great to meet some photographers that I’ve known via online forums for years and to meet some new friends as well. The weekend was inspiring and thought provoking…lets just say my head hurt after.
I couldn’t leave without capturing my friend’s children…they are so lovely and I just wanted to photograph their sweet, energetic and creative spirits. I expect they will soar to great heights in their lives and I love them to bits!!
This lovely family contacted me to have their family photos taken as their youngest was jetting off to teach in Asia…How exciting!!! I had to giggle at the information sheet when they wrote that there would be “5 adults and a cat”! He was a lovely wee thing, but didn’t particularly like posing…until I discovered he was extremely interested in my flash reflection and was following my every move once I popped that sucker on! So cute!
My first session of 2012 was fab.u.lous! Grown children (that listen…and *blush* – so cute!) and an instant connection through like interests and welcoming parents. What more can a girl ask for?! Oh, and let’s not forget my brief introduction to a family favourite, Skip Bo, and their beautiful, poser of a dog, Murphy. I loved him so much that I offered to dog sit if they ever needed me to….and I wasn’t joking!
I gotta say, 2011 was a truly wonderful year for me both personally (except for my pooch ) and professionally. The two are linked so closely and this was the year that I jumped on opportunities with both feet, got my groove back and felt more grounded than I’ve probably ever felt. And THAT my friends, is a good feeling!
To celebrate, I’ve put together a small slideshow of some of my favourite shots from the past year. I think it’s important to reflect on the past, learn from it all and then move on. So here’s to 2011 and look out 2012! I’m ready to take on whatever it brings!
Now before you tell me I can’t spell (which in fact is true…), let me tell you a little story about this fall family session at Petrie Island. I had asked Mom & Dad to pull out some scrabble pieces and spell “laughter” for me. While discussing their photography session with them, it became apparent that this was something that is very important in their home and I wanted to capture it directly and indirectly. So I set them to work and ran off to photograph their beautiful girls. Low and behold, I came back to the scrabble pieces spelled, “LAFTER”! Too funny! They had the other tiles ready to go, but they wanted to see my reaction…touche my friends, touche…

It truly is the best medicine! Meeting and photographing this family was nothing short of fabulous. Usually there’s a bit of a warming up period for the kids and (especially ) the parents, but we were in stitches from the get go. And man, Mom had *the best* laugh that was completely infectious and my camera loved her for it!
